Kaal Bhairav Sahasranamavali —
The Thousand Names of Time
The Kaal Bhairav Sahasranamavali — meaning “The Thousand Names of Lord Kaal Bhairava” — is a sacred hymn that praises the thousand qualities and forms of Lord Bhairava, the fierce and compassionate form of Lord Shiva.
Bhairava is known as the Lord of Time (Kāla) — the protector of dharma, the destroyer of illusion, and the guardian of all sacred spaces. He removes fear, ignorance, and negativity, guiding the devotee toward inner strength, wisdom, and freedom.
Chanting or listening to His thousand names is believed to bring courage, clarity, and deep spiritual peace
Section 1: The Spiritual Significance
“Sahasra” means thousand and “Namavali” means garland of names.
So, the Kaal Bhairav Sahasranamavali is a garland made of a thousand divine names of Lord Bhairava.
Each name describes one aspect of Him — His power, wisdom, grace, and compassion.
Some names call Him Kṣetrapāla (protector of sacred space), some call Him Mṛtyuñjaya (conqueror of death), and others describe His peaceful nature as Śānta Bhairava or Ananta Rūpa (the infinite form).
Together, these thousand names remind us that Bhairava is everything — within us, around us, and beyond us.
"When awareness awakens, the sun rises inside night —
and even time forgets how to move."
Section 2: How to Chant for Maximum Effect
You don’t have to be a scholar or a priest to connect with Bhairava.
What matters most is devotion and sincerity.
Here’s a simple way to include the Sahasranamavali in your daily or weekly practice:
-
Prepare the Space - Light a lamp or candle before an image or symbol of Bhairava — even a Shiva Linga or flame is enough. Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths.
-
Set Your Intention (Sankalpa) - Before chanting, silently offer your prayer — it could be for courage, healing, peace, or spiritual strength.
-
Chant or Listen - If you can, chant the names slowly and clearly. Even meditating on one name — “Om Kaalabhairavaya Namah” — brings great benefit.
-
Sit in Silence - After the chant, sit quietly for a few minutes. That silence is Bhairava’s blessing — the peace that comes when fear disappears.
